Taliban officials across the country have forcibly displaced residents from their homes, partly to distribute land to their own supporters. Most of the victims targeted have been from Hazara Shia community, who were also the target of mass killings by the Taliban in the 1990s.

Taliban officials claim that evictions were carried out based on court orders, but the evicted residents say that they have owned the land since the 1970s.

Eviction notices told residents that if they did not comply, they ‘had no right to complain about the consequences.’

The number of internally displaced people in Afghanistan currently stands over 4 million, with 665,000 having been newly displaced this year alone. This number will only rise as the Taliban continues to forcibly evict citizens from their homes.
