During this week’s annual UN refugee conference, refugee and humanitarian crises in Afghanistan and Ethiopia were the focus of intense debate
It was agreed that ‘urgent, flexible and unconditional aid’ must be delivered to the millions of internally displaced Afghans in the country, and this must happen before the arrival of winter. It is assured that the Taliban would not impede these operations. However, the international community must take greater action to prevent the complete meltdown of Afghanistan’s service, banking and economic systems.
There was great concern about the limited ability of agencies to provide aid to civilians trapped within Tigray, and how the conflict is spreading to other northern regions of Ethiopia. It is reported that about 90% of Tigray’s population currently needs humanitarian assistance.
