Ethiopia and starvation

400,000 people in Ethiopia’s Tigray region are estimated to be facing ‘catastrophic’ hunger.

Tigray and its 6 million inhabitants have been facing an increasingly restrictive blockade by the government since violence broke out in early November. The region has been receiving only a fraction of the food and fuel needed to keep the people alive, and no medical supplies at all since July.

Aid agencies report that only a tenth of the number of food trucks needed to keep the people fed are being let into the region, and efforts from the international community to provide aid is seen as ‘meddling’ in internal affairs. The work of two international agencies has been suspending, and multiple UN officials expelled.
